Kinderdijk

Take a personal dive into the world-famous struggle between the Dutch and the water that surrounds them. At just half an hour‘s ride from Rotterdam, you’ll find Kinderdijk, the impressive windmill capital of the Netherlands. The Kinderdijk mills were built as a system to prevent the land below sea level from flooding. The historical windmills, dams, dikes and pumping stations form a breathtaking feat of landscape engineering dating all the way back to 1277. At Kinderdijk, 19 authentic Dutch windmills stand tall, sails turning proudly to give you a real taste of Dutch history.

An action-packed UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Kinderdijk windmills are an official UNESCO World Heritage Site, because they are a crucial part of global history. Throughout the ages, the Dutch worked to claim their country from the sea and rivers. Today, much of the country still lies below sea level, protected by a uniquely impressive series of waterworks. At Kinderdijk, you can try yourself to protect the Dutch in a great combination of cultural heritage and action-packed adventure. Do you have what it takes to keep this country dry? Come and find out for yourself with this great Kinderdijk offer!

Marvel at ancient and modern technology

Kinderdijk shows how the Dutch used modern technology to withstand the power of the water and the wind. The heavy clay dikes, the giant wooden wheels and sails of the windmills, and steam-powered pumps are still here. As the ages passed, new inventions, technical improvements, and computer-guided diesel pumping stations were added. Today, you can come and see, feel, smell and experience these spectacular giants of technical history for yourself. At Kinderdijk, history awaits in an adventure on the ocean floor!
