Rijksmuseum

If you only have enough time for one museum visit during your stay in the Netherlands, go to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Pick a day, any day – the Rijksmuseum is open 365 days a year! Grab the opportunity to see one of the most famous paintings ever made, The Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn. It’s also one of the largest paintings made in its day. Interesting tidbit: the name is actually based on a mistake. Assumed for centuries to depict a night scene, the painting turned out to be covered in a dark varnish.

Dutch art movement

While in the Rijksmuseum, connect with an important 1900s Dutch art movement known as the Hague School. It consisted of local painters like Jacob Maris and Willem Mesdag, who sought to convey the mood of the landscape around them. Many of their works show the beach and fishing boats of Scheveningen. They focused on the unique tones of sky and clouds, deeply familiar to everyone who has ever visited the area.

Tulip vases

The Rijksmuseum showcases over 8,000 pieces of art in 80 rooms. Together, these artworks illustrate more than 800 years of Dutch history, from the Middle Ages to the present. And not just in paintings. Explore the Rijksmuseum’s stunning collection of Delft Blue pottery, with objects ranging from tea sets to tulip vases. These vases were designed to hold tulips, a precious commodity during the Golden Age. In 1635, one tulip bulb famously sold for 6,000 guilders – the price of a canal house.

The ultimate doll’s house

Another collection sure to pique your interest is the Rijksmuseum’s set of doll’s houses from the Golden Age. The ultimate object to admire is the actual doll’s house built and decorated by Petronella Oortman. Why this particular one? Because it plays a central role in Jessie Burton’s 2014 bestselling mystery novel The Miniaturist. Recently, the book was turned into a three-part BBC series, to be aired in 2017. A conversation piece if ever there was one!
